The Netherlands: APM Terminals Selects Cargotec as Crane Supplier

APM Terminals Selects Cargotec as Crane Supplier

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has selected Cargotec as the quay crane supplier for the company’s future Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam.

The decision reflects a comprehensive bidding process designed to find cranes that offered the highest safety, productivity and automation standards required for the largest containerships in the world.

Cargotec will supply eight Kalmar super quay cranes and two Kalmar barge quay cranes to the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion project between December 2013 and December 2014. Cargotec’s Kalmar Monobox-type, Super Post Panamax quay cranes have an outreach of 25 containers with Bromma spreaders. The cranes are semi-automated and capable of handling 2 x 40 foot or 2 x 20 foot containers in one lift (twin-lift and tandem-lift capability) and equipped with various additional features including second trolley and remote control, which combined are expected to lead to significant improvements in container handling productivity and safety. The two barge quay cranes will have an outreach of 36 meters.

Frank Tazelaar, Managing Director of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II stated: “We want to constantly improve productivity for our customers and safety for our employees so we designed the terminal using innovation and foresight for the future. Automation – and the safety and efficiency gains it brings is a key performance driver. The quay cranes selected represent an industry first – to be operated by remote control. Using two trolleys on quay cranes is also not common. Twin lift spreaders will yield better performance too”.

The cranes are being engineered in Cargotec’s Rotterdam, The Netherlands office and manufactured at Cargotec’s facility in Nankong, China.
