Senators Ask Conference Committee to Boost Lakes Navigation

Thirteen senators from Great Lakes states wrote yesterday to leaders of a House-Senate conference committee considering major water resources legislation, asking them to include funding for Great Lakes navigation projects as they resolve differences between House and Senate bills.

The letter, from members of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force to the chairs and ranking members of the relevant Senate and House Committees, seeks language ensuring that funding from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund helps reduce a backlog of harbor maintenance projects in the Great Lakes. The conference committee seeking to resolve differences between the House and Senate water resources bills held its first meeting Nov. 20.

The letter was led by task force co-chairs Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich, and Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill. It was also signed by Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.; Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.; Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.; Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.; Rob Portman, R-Ohio; Al Franken, D-Minn.; Joe Donnelly, D-Ind.; Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.; Richard Durbin, D-Ill.; and Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis.
