President of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, inaugurated the official development of a new runway at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Hulhule yesterday.

The project is awarded to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) from China.

During the ceremony, the president was accompanied by the managing director of Maldives Airport’s Company Ltd (MACL), Adil Moosa, the chairman of Beijing Urban Construction Group, Mr. Chen Dai Huaand and the president’s cabinet ministers.

The administration has budgeted more than $800 million for the development of VIA, according to the president office’s latest announcement.

The land reclamation of the new runway began last July and this process will be completed by the end of this March.
