The Maldives’ Ministry of Environment and Energy has awarded Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) a 6.8 million contract for the Thilafushi land reclamation works – part of the Waste Management Project of Male’ Region.

The agreement was signed yesterday by Thoriq Ibrahim, the Minister of Environment and Energy, and Krik Riza, the deputy managing director of MTCC, at the ceremony held at the environment ministry.

The project, funded under the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) budget, is to be completed in 240 days with 15 hectares of land reclaimed.

According to local media, reclamation of land in Thilafushi is a phase of the ongoing efforts to cease the burning of waste in Thilafushi.

When all the phases of the project are complete, it would have the capacity to incinerate 500 tonnes of waste daily.
