Karnaphuli River Dredging Reaches Final Phase

The capital dredging of the River Karnaphuli and construction of its marine driveway with bank protection wall along the city’s side are likely to be completed within two months, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at tuseday.

However, the minister said they would demand compensation from the contractors for the dredging work, for failing to complete the project on schedule.

Almost 96% of the dredging has already been done and rest will be finished within two months,” he said while visiting the project.

The capital dredging will restore the river’s depth up to four metres for vessel movement through those points where navigability decreased drastically.

Shahajahan Khan also visited the Western Marine Ship Yard, where a passenger ship is being built for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
