MTI Holland: Doctorate Degree for Shi Wei

MTI Holland Doctorate Degree for Shi Wei

MTI Holland announced that Shi Wei has received his doctoral degree on March 3, 2013. Shi Wei’s extensive research focused on the subject of ‘Dynamics of Energy Systems Behaviour and Emissions of Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers’ and was supervised by his promotor, prof. ir. D. Stapersma.

Shi Wei successfully defended his thesis in which he strived ‘to know, to capture, to understand and to be able to predict the behaviour of the energy system and emissions of TSHDs, in particular under dynamic loads’.

For his research, Shi conducted comprehensive measurements on board of two TSHDs to collect data on the energy system behaviour and exhaust emissions.

The primary conclusion of Shi’s study is that a dynamic load of the energy system of a TSHD is not resulting in a penalty, in terms of total fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

The methods presented in his thesis can eventually be used for optimising the design of a TSHD and reducing operational costs (fuel and emissions).

Shi Wei received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2005 and earned the degree of Master of Engineering at Tianjin University in 2007.

That same year, he received a scholarship from China Scholarship Council for his PhD research at Delft University of Technology.

Consequently, Shi Wei joined MTI Holland in 2009.
