Frustrations Grow over Abbot Point Expansion Plans

While campaigning to protect the Great Barrier Reef, Greenpeace activists have condemned the Abbot Point Coal Terminal expansion plans, reports sunshinecoastdaily.com.

Regarding the Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney’s announcement on this topic, the Greenpeace spokeswoman Louise Matthiesson stated that the government was “rubbing salt into the wounds” of environmentalists, fishermen, residents and tourism groups.

“The current proposal involves dredging millions of tonnes of seabed in important fishing grounds, and dumping the spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park,” Matthiesson said, and added that this new AP-X development would repeat the same problems.

Seeney stated that any expansion of Abbot Point Coal Terminal would be undertaken under the world’s highest environmental standards.
