Ohio & Erie Canal Dredging Starts Tomorrow
The National Park Service (NPS) has just announced that its maintenance staff will be dredging and working on the Ohio & Erie Canal for the next few weeks.
NPS will temporarily close the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP), from Frazee House to Station Road Trailhead, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12 through Friday, December 5, 2014. The trail will be open evenings and weekends.
The maintenance dredging is needed to remove accumulated debris from the canal to allow a free flow of water in the canal and to mow the canal banks.
The Towpath Trail follows the historic route of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Before the canal was built, Ohio was a sparsely settled wilderness where travel was difficult and getting crops to market was nearly impossible. The canal, built between 1825 and 1832, provided a successful transportation route from Cleveland, on Lake Erie, to Portsmouth, on the Ohio River.
