ADBP: Supervision of SACD Completed

Business & Finance

Anthony D Bates Partnership (ADBP) has completed the supervision of Associated British Ports with the Port of Southampton’s recent capital dredge project – the Southampton Approach Channel Deepening (SACD).

The project consisted of dredging over 5 million cubic meters of material over a 54km stretch of existing navigational channel in the South of England. The works have improved the tidal access window for the world’s largest container vessels and enhanced navigational safety. During the course of the works seven different trailing suction hopper dredgers, four plough vessels and a backhoe with four hoppers barges were onsite.

All areas of the port continued to be fully operational during the dredging works. The majority of the dredged material was placed at a licensed offshore disposal site.

Significantly some 20% of material was placed in a licensed aggregate area where it can be sourced and reused for future beneficial use. Additionally approximately 100,000 cubic meters of material was put to immediate beneficial use in the construction of the nearby Cowes breakwater.

As dredging is a specialized field of civil engineering, ADBP was employed by Associated British Ports as the Engineer’s representative. ADBP assisted Associated British Ports in all aspects of the capital dredging project, including the initial tender analysis and contract negotiations, and subsequently, full time on-site supervision of the works for the 12 month duration of the works.
