Picture of the Day: The Wood Wharf Project
Single propeller trailer suction hopper dredger ‘Scelveringhe’ has just delivered one more payload of aggregate material for the Wood Wharf project.
As part of Canary Wharf’s 10 year redevelopment of Wood Wharf, Commercial Marine & Piling Ltd. (CMP) is currently engaged in reclamation of 9,000sqm of land from West India Dock South.
CMP’s 10 month contract is a design and build combi-wall cofferdam split into 3 cells to allow a phased handover to the client. The cofferdam design features 160 tubular piles 1220mm in diameter socketed 10m into the dock bed.
As part of the works, innovative geotechnical techniques are being used to stabilize 25,000 m³ of dock bed silts. This provides an environmental benefit to the project by reducing the amount of materials to be excavated, transported and disposed.
Before the cofferdam can be dewatered 50,000 tonnes of granular fill will be installed to provide a stable piling platform and structurally assist the combi-wall against bending.
