During the recent EADA (India) conference, which promotes the exchange and development of dredging technology, Royal IHC presented its design for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD).
Following the introduction of Emission Control Areas by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), exhaust gas emission reduction (predominantly sulphur and nitrogen oxides) is more important than ever.
“LNG complies with the strictest emission regulations and has good return on investment potential compared to other alternatives,” said Kees Derks, Area Sales Director India. “Therefore, IHC has a clear focus on LNG as a marine fuel.”
At the event, Derks explained the various fuels used for dredging in the past and present, as well as the alternatives for the future. He also presented design challenges, such as increased fuel storage capacity requirements, load step capability and safety implications.
Furthermore, a revolutionary patented design was presented that reduces the amount of air enclosed in the overflow and thus the turbidity/plume generated by TSHDs.
Robert van de Ketterij, Managing Director of IHC MTI said: “IHC’s efforts in exploring the possibility of an LNG-powered dredging vessel haven’t gone unnoticed. In April 2015, we secured an order for the construction of the world’s first two LNG low-emission dredging vessels for Belgian dredging group DEME.”
“In February 2016, DEME also ordered a third TSHD with dual-fuel engines (diesel and LNG). This makes the LNG-powered dredger a perfect example of how our forward thinking pays off,” he added.
As an exclusive at the EADA (India) event, IHC also introduced its virtual reality dredger experience, which enabled visitors to walk on – and under – the decks of the dredging vessel by means of virtual reality glasses. Received with much enthusiasm, the experience provided further insight into IHC’s advanced technology and design.
