Dredging at Great Lake’s Largest Commercial Harbor Begins Soon

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, has announced that its contractors will soon begin dredging portions of the Duluth-Superior Harbor, the largest harbor on the Great Lakes with nearly 40 million tons of material, mainly iron ore and coal, shipped or received each year.

Dredging will begin this month and is expected to be completed mid-November of this year.

The Corps awarded two contracts for removal of nearly 350,000 CY of material from the harbor.

Marine Tech of Duluth, Minnesota was awarded about $1.4 million and Roen Salvage of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin was awarded about $1.25 million to dredge material from the federal navigation channel in order to maintain the channel for optimal commercial navigation.

Marine Tech will place the dredge material at Interstate Island while Roen Salvage will use 21st Avenue Embayment.

Material will be placed in accordance with the habitat restoration design developed under the St. Louis River Area of Concern Remedial Action Plan.
