According to TCAP, this reclaimed land will provide critical space for housing, infrastructure, and other essential services, helping to protect Tuvalu’s vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate change, such as sea-level rise and coastal erosion.

Also, the work is set to strengthen the capacity of the Government of Tuvalu and civil society organizations to effectively plan and implement environmentally-sound coastal protection work.

UNDP added that the scheme will further demonstrate the feasibility of land reclamation work on atoll nations like Tuvalu, to inform similar efforts to beat sea level rise threats elsewhere.
