India: DCI Celebrates National Safety Week

The Dredging Corporation of India Ltd, Visakhapatnam has celebrated the National Safety Week. The celebrations were inaugurated on 4 th March 2011 with Safety flag hoisting and safety pledge administering to the employees by the then CMD, Capt.S.S.Tripathi.

During the week, elocution and slogan competitions on safety conducted. Safety lecture sessions on Fire Safety and Hazardous waste disposal were undertaken. Capt.P.M.Saravanan, DGM (HSE) welcomed the gathering and presented the valedictory function and the function was presided over by the company’s CVO Mr.S.Vasudevarao, IPS.

He during his presidential address has touched upon various accidents which have taken place in Chile, New Zealand, etc and the importance of integrating safety and security. He has also insisted that safety is not a peripheral activity but a central activity. He advised the HSE department to come out with a newsletter on safety issues and aim to work towards achieving zero accidents.

Mr.Ranjit Singh, Surveyor In-charge, IRS, Visakhapatnam was the Chief Guest. He, during his address, touched upon the genesis of safety in shipping industry and International Safety Management Code. He has quoted examples from his work life to emphasise the importance of safety.

Mr.K.Kiriti, GM (Finance) of the company also addressed the gathering. He touched upon the importance of accident free work place and the precautions to be taken. He also emphasised that each and every one is responsible for the safety of his co-worker.

Mr.Ranjit Singh distributed prizes to winners of various competitions and Dr.P.K.Sethi, M (HSE) proposed vote of thanks. The celebrations were co-ordinated by the officers and staff of the company’s HSE department.
