USA: Meeting on Grand Calumet River Contaminated Sediment Cleanup Scheduled for June 2

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and three other federal and state agencies will host a meeting June 2 to update the public on a contaminated sediment cleanup planned for the East Chicago and Hammond, Indiana, area. The cleanup, funded under the Great Lakes Legacy Act, involves the Grand Calumet River and Roxana Marsh, near the West Branch of the Grand Calumet.

Officials from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Indiana Departments of Environmental Management and Natural Resources will join EPA representatives at the open house-style meeting from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Roxana Senior Center, 900 Shell St., East Chicago.

The project includes removal of river bottom sediment and habitat restoration. Work will begin in mid-June and continue through summer 2012. EPA is providing 65 percent of the projected $50 million project cost, with the State of Indiana contributing 35 percent.
