USA: Fort Pierce Inlet Dredging Progresses Well

A long awaited beach renourishment project is underway at the Fort Pierce Inlet.

Approximately 416,000 cubic yards of sand are being pumped onto the beach on the south side of the St. Lucie County’s inlet.

It’s a recreational benefit,” said Richard Bouchard, St. Lucie County coastal engineer.

Reauthorized as part of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996, this project is expected to be completed by March 18, and it will cost about $5.5 million.

It provides storm damage protection. Wide beaches are also needed for sea turtle nesting,” concluded Bouchard.
