Melching Inc. Prepares to Move Forward on Dredging Permit (USA)

Melching Inc. will proceed with a dredging permit application to allow Great Lakes freighter access to the former paper mill property on Muskegon Lake.

Melching has addressed the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to ask for a dredge permit for a 2,000-foot section of the property’s shoreline. The company’s application says that approximately 50,000-cubic yards of lake bottom materials will be removed. The bottom sediments would be transported to the 120-acre paper mill site or disposed of in a proper landfill offsite.

State environmental regulators will organize a public hearing on the company’s dredge permit application prior to reaching a decision.

Water Resources Division Grand Rapids office supervisor Luis Saldivia said his staff will arrange the date, time and place of the hearing, which will be announced to allow interested parties to attend.
