USA: Pekin Gets Nod for International Marine Terminal

The Heart of Illinois Regional Port District is moving forward with plans to build the new port on the Illinois River in Pekin.

Steve Jaeger, executive director for The Heart of Illinois Regional Port District, stated Thursday that construction of the new marine port should begin in 2013 and be completed by 2014.

The engineering firm will determine if there is any need for dredging, but Jaeger said that it is unlikely because the loading platforms and piping will extend out to the channel of the river where barges will be loaded.

This new port will create 20-30 jobs, plus 10-20 more in related fields, and it will make transporting goods much easier.
