Long Beach Island Gets New Sand (USA)

As APP.com reports, the contractors for the Army Corps of Engineers started pumping sand onto the Long Beach Island Monday for the $16.7 million replenishment project, township officials said.

The project will make improvements to township beaches from 31st Street to 57th Street.

“We are happy that the work has started,Mayor Joseph Mancini said Wednesday. “I think that they will be done by the June 15 deadline and ready for the summer.”

In late September, the Corps of Engineers awarded a contract for the replenishment of a 26-block stretch of beach in the Brant Beach section of the township to Illinois-based Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. The contract calls for the placement of 1.2 million cubic yards of sand on the beach, along with the construction of dune cross-overs, sand fencing and dune grass plantings.
