Malta Should Explore Potential of Land Reclamation, Says Labour Leader

The Maltatoday reports that Labour Leader Joseph Muscat claims internal documentation penned by MEPA experts is urging government to explore land reclamation from sea.

Muscat claimed that the party is informed that internal MEPA documentation, penned by MEPA experts, is recommending government to explore land reclamation options.

He added that government is applying pressure so that positive references to land reclamation are removed from this documentation.

Discussing land reclamation, Muscat pointed out that the Freeport is built on reclaimed land, adding also that the Msida yacht marina area, from the Worker’s Monument onwards, is also reclaimed land.

According to the Maltatoday, he said that cautious land reclamation would allow the construction of projects of added value to the infrastructure of the country which sees the participation of the private sector, while also allowing the ‘burden’ of construction waste to be instead used as a resource.

Muscat said that one of the areas being considered is at Bahar ic-Caghaq.
