Winooski River Dredging Underway

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has closed its fishing access area off Windemere Way in Colchester near the mouth of the Winooski River in order to remove heavy deposits of silt at the boat ramp.

Normal siltation, plus deposits left last year by Irene, made it difficult to launch boats during the low water in recent months.

“A local contractor is dredging the area at the base of the boat ramp and should have the work completed in about two weeks,” said Michael Wichrowski, Fish & Wildlife’s lands and facilities coordinator. “We chose this time of year to do the work after many anglers have put away their boats and before extreme cold weather.”

“This is one of our busiest fishing access areas, and we wanted to make sure the boat ramp will be easy to use before Winooski River walleye fishing gets hot next spring.”
