Sweden: Aarsleff, Pihl Build New Port in Stockholm

Aarsleff, Pihl Build New Port in Stockholm

A joint venture formed by Per Aarsleff A/S and E. Pihl & Søn A.S. is to build port structures in the port Värtahamnen in Stockholm.

Aarsleff has entered into a contract with the Port of Stockholm, and Aarsleff and Pihl will be carrying out all works, including design, in connection with the turnkey contract.

The contract is for about one billion Danish Kroner and is to be implemented during the next four years.

One of Pihl’s main areas of expertise is harbour constructions and we look forward to carrying out this project together with Aarsleff with whom we have been working for many years and with great success,” says Director Kurt Carlsen, E. Pihl & Søn A.S.

Pihl is currently working on a number of large projects in Sweden. In Stockholm Pihl is working on the city line. Here Pihl is building a tunnel under Söderstrømmen between Söder Mälarstrand and Riddarholmen in a joint venture with Züblin. In Stockholm Pihl is also building the Årsta railway bridge just as we have recently completed a motorway tunnel forming part of the infrastructure project in Stockholm called Norra Länken.

New port makes room for urban development in the Swedish capital

The new Värtahamnen will allow space for urban development in an old port area at the Port of Stockholm. The ferry service from Stockholm to the Baltic countries will therefore be moved from the old port area to the new one, Värtahamnen, in Stockholm.

Värtahamnen will be established in the current harbour basin with five new ferry berths and modern facilities, and once the ferry service has been relocated, the old port area will be converted into a new urban area with office buildings, shops and housing.

The port project mainly comprises construction of a new pile founded deck, including installation of 35,000 m steel pipes and casting of 45,000 m3 concrete structures. Production of the pre-fabricated concrete elements for the deck is to take place in Aarsleff’s facilities in Swinoujscie, Poland. Design and planning of the project will be commenced immediately but the production will not commence until sometime during the summer of 2013.

Aarsleff and Pihl have appointed Cowi as their partner for carrying out the design work.
