USA: McIntyre Testifies in Support of Beach Renourishment

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre testified yesterday in support of beach renourishment projects that are critical to North Carolina’s economy.

Congressman McIntyre stated, “North Carolina beaches provide jobs, revenue, fun, and family time, and it is critical that we do all we can to support and sustain them. Recent proposed federal regulations from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife are a potential threat to all beaches and coastal communities, and it is critical that we ensure a balance of important beach renourishment while also protecting our fragile environment. I will keep fighting for every penny for every pebble of sand!”

McIntyre testified before a congressional subcommittee that is considering proposed U.S. Fish and Wildlife regulations that would negatively impact 96 miles of coastline in North Carolina by designating these as a crucial habitat for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. In his testimony, McIntyre noted that he has long supported the protection of Loggerhead Sea Turtles and that state and local governments already have management plans in place to preserve the turtle and its nesting habitat. In addition, McIntyre noted that every Army Corps of Engineers beach nourishment project has undergone a thorough environmental review process prior to approval that includes significant coordination with the local management plan.

Congressman McIntyre has been contacted by coastal communities in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties who are concerned about this proposed regulation.

Congressman McIntyre, Chairman of the Congressional Waterways Caucus, has long been a supporter of investments to coastal infrastructure and beach renourishment projects and advocated the need to improve the maintenance of the numerous inlets to the Intracoastal Waterway in the Cape Fear Region.
