NQBP: Closure of Mackay Breakwater for Maintenance (Australia)

Closure of Mackay Breakwater for Maintenance

The southern breakwater at the Mackay Marina will be closed to the public from Monday 4th November to mid-February next year for general maintenance works.

The maintenance work will require placement of about 30,000 tonnes of hard rock along approximately 400 meters of the outer side of the breakwater wall. This will involve the use of heavy lifting cranes and trucks accessing the breakwater road. Individual rocks will vary in size from about one tonne up to eight tonnes.

The maintenance works will be complemented by upgrading of the bitumen road in places where wave action has affected the surface.

From next year, NQBP plans an ongoing annual maintenance works program to be undertaken between around June and September each year. As with this year’s maintenance works program, public access to the breakwater will be closed during such future works.

Operations at the breakwater will be undertaken between the hours of 6:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Saturday and every effort will be made to minimise disruption to nearby residents and businesses.

As the breakwater will be a construction site it will be closed to public access on a 24/7 basis until access is reinstated.
