Port Kembla Development Involves Dredging

NSW Ports is set to undertake a major upgrade to facilities at Port Kembla to increase port and grain handling capacity.

NSW Ports in conjunction with major Australian ASX listed logistics company Qube Holdings and commodities trader Noble Group, will jointly invest to upgrade the existing berth (Berth 103) to accommodate large bulk carriers up to 225 metres in length.

The project involves dredging of approximately 120 000 cubic metres of material to increase berth depth, extending the berth and construction of new bulk storage and handling facilities. The new facility is specifically designed to receive grain by rail and will utilise the existing Inner Harbour rail sidings.

It will have the capacity to handle in excess of 1.3 million tonnes of export grain per annum.

Work is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2014 and be operational by the first quarter of 2015.
