Sandy Neck Renourishment Underway

Major renourishment project aimed to restore dunes that were hit by the winter storms has been underway at Sandy Neck.

Each year, high winds and waves cause damage to the front dune at Sandy Neck, and sacrificial sand is put in place to protect the parking lot and shoreline. About 5,500 cubic yards of sand was used last year.

This current work will help stabilize the dune against winter storms. Sandy Neck Beach Park Manager Nina Coleman said that is only phase 1 of the project. She is hoping that phase two of the project, which will begin in 2015, will further stabilize the dune.
