BIWTA Needs 100 Dredgers, Minister Says

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) needs at least 100 dredgers to help maintain the country’s rivers navigability, according to the Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan.

“The BIWTA has only 21 dredgers. A process is underway to procure 20 more dredgers,” Khan said during a seminar organized by the Dutch company Royal IHC at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka.

At the meeting, he urged private entrepreneurs to come forward to dredge rivers, adding that the government is currently implementing dredging projects on 53 river routes.

The Netherlands Ambassador in Dhaka, Leoni Margaretha Cuelenaere, Executive Director of Karnafuly Shipbuilders Pvt Ltd, Eng. M.A. Rashid and Chairman of SS Rahman Limited Rakibul Alam Dipu, among others, attended the seminar.
