Next Stage of Maroochydore Beach Nourishment Works

Work to relocate sand from the Maroochy River mouth to the sand dunes of the popular beach will start in early July as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s beach nourishment program.

The 12-week project will see around 100,000m³ of loose sand material from the lower Maroochy River pumped directly by pipeline to Maroochydore Beach.

The Council reported that the pipeline, which has been in place since 2011, extends south from the Cotton Tree Caravan Park along the Maroochydore Beach, terminating in line with the Alexandra Headland Skate Park.

According to Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray, the works were essential to the ongoing protection of the adjacent assets that rely on the beach and dune system to act as a buffer for protection from storm erosion.

It’s great to see the next stage of nourishment works at Maroochydore Beach roll out,Cr O’Pray said. “We know that these works protect our community assets, including roads, caravan parks, skate parks and community spaces. In addition to allowing the shoreline to respond to natural erosion events, it also helps ensure our beaches are in great shape for the upcoming summer season.”

The Council added that access to Maroochydore Beach will be restricted within a small area (approximately 50m x 20m) where earth moving machinery is used to profile the sand throughout the project.
