Public meeting for Avon and Buxton beachfill projects

Dare County will host a public informational meeting to discuss upcoming Hatteras Island beach nourishment projects at 5 p.m. today, March 24, 2022, at the Fessenden Center in Buxton.

The meeting will focus on the two beach nourishment projects that will be constructed on Hatteras Island later this year—approximately 2.5 miles of shoreline in Avon and approximately 2.9 miles of shoreline in Buxton.

The public meeting—which will also be livestreamed on Dare County’s YouTube channel—will include presentations from the engineers and contractors for the project, and there will also be an opportunity for attendees to ask any related questions they may have.

This $25,8 million worth Dare County beachfill project was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD) in late 2021.

The project which is expected to begin this spring includes dredging and placing approx. 2.2 cubic yards of sand along the Hatteras shoreline — 1 million cubic yards for the Avon nourishment and 1.2 million cubic yards for the Buxton.
