Work was recently completed on Buffalo’s north breakwater, which is essential to providing safe navigation in Buffalo Harbor, USACE said.

Storms in 2019 and 2020 caused extensive damage to the north and south heads, with collapsed walls, core stone blown out and fallen concrete caps.

Navigation through the harbor supports more than $50 million in business revenue, over 200 jobs and more than $16 million in labor income.

Over 27,000 tons of stone has been laid in order to repair over 1,000 feet of the breakwater.

According to USACE, work will resume in 2024 when more stone is brought in from Vermont.
