This was a crucial project as it had been 51 years since the last maintenance dredging of Kaunakakai Harbor which occurred in 1973, said USACE.

Approximately 28,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed during the project.

The purpose of the maintenance dredging was to remove sediment that has accumulated over time, so vessels that deliver food, fuel and supplies to the island of Molokai may safely enter, exit and maneuver within the harbor, said USACE.
