Singapore: Ayer Merbau Land Reclamation Makes Progress

The reclamation of Ayer Merbau, Jurong Island has started on 16 July 2011 and will be completed by 15 July 2012.

During this period, bulk carriers, self propelled barges and pusher tugs and barges in composite unit carrying bulk sand will be transiting the Banyan Basin, Selat Pandan, Sinki Fairway to Ayer Merbau reclamation project area.

The work includes the removal of existing rocks, dredging and reclamation works in the working area. Shore protection works will be carried out by crane barges and dredger. Soil investigation works will also be carried out in the working area.

Ayer Merbau is part of Jurong Island that is close to Cyrene Reef.

Sources estimate that the reclamation is expected to add some 10 per cent more land to Ayer Merbau, where Singapore’s first petrochemical complex, Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore is also sited.
