Bangladesh: Capital Dredging Project in Financial Limbo

The Financial Express reports that the government has backtracked from its electoral pledge of implementing Tk 114.73 billion (Tk 11,473 crore) capital dredging project during its tenure due to fund constraint.

The Awami League-led alliance government undertook a mega project in 2009, but no river route has yet experienced dredging.

According to the original plan navigability of nearly 5,339 kilometre waterways under the country’s 53 river routes was designed to revive through dredging.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan told the FE that the project could not be launched due to fund shortage and delay in completion of an in-depth study on the project.

It would take two more years to launch the project because of non-availability of fund,” he added.
