Nigeria: Government Begins Dredging on 43 Rivers

The Abiola Ajimobi administration has begun work on 43 rivers and streams in the 33 local government areas in Oyo State, according to The Nation.

Alhaji Wasiu Dauda, the Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, said: “The present administration has deemed it fit to expand the streams as they can no longer contain the volume of water flowing through them. This is to prevent another flood disaster in the state.”

The commissioner expressed the government’s determination to prevent another disaster during the rains, saying the dredging would be completed soon.

The expectation of the government from the residents is that they should desist from dumping of refuse on waterways, erection of structures on water channels and observance of government standard distance of 45-50 metres from river banks,” stated Alhaji Gbolagade Busari, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Orientation.
