USACE to Request Funds for Burns Harbor Dredging

Shamel Abou-El-Seoud, a lead engineer and chief of construction and operations for the Army Corps’ Chicago district, told the state port commission that USACE will request funds to complete an important dredging project for the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor.

According to nwitimes.com, these funds likely wouldn’t be available until the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, 2013.

The most efficient deep-water port on the Great Lakes, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor is located in Portage, Ind., on the south shore of Lake Michigan just 30 land miles and 18 nautical miles from Chicago.

Since port operations commenced in the 1960s, port waterways have only been dredged once.
