Bangladesh: Kirtankhola River Illegal Dredging Causes Major Concerns

According to thedailystar.net, illegal sand dredging is threatening the newly opened Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabat Bridge over the Kirtankhola River.

Muhammad Nazrul Islam, superintending engineer of Water Development Board, stated: “The sand extraction from the riverbed is gradually weakening the foundation of the embankment and making the region vulnerable to floods and erosion.”

Thedailystar.net also reports that the uncontrolled dredging is affecting navigability at the Barisal river port and weakening river protection embankments in this area.
