USA: Barnett Reservoir Dredging Plan Moves Forward

A public meeting to discuss a proposed comprehensive dredging plan at Barnett Reservoir was held on Thursday, September 27, at Northwest Rankin Middle School cafeteria.

Reservoir officials recently completed a thorough sounding study in Pelahatchie Bay and the Fannin area of the lower main lake and the Lake Harbor area north of Mississippi Highway 43, producing maps that depict dredging needs.

After preliminary meetings with a few leaseholders, reservoir General Manager John Sigman said dredge plan has been drafted.

An important part of the project will be disposal of the dredged materials. Sigman said maps are available showing many options for where the spoil can be deposited, including lengthening existing points, shoring up existing spoil islands, and creating new islands.

Sigman urged the public to review these locations and see how each might impact their areas.
