Deltares Introduces Sensor Validation Testing Film

A film has been produced showing the tests conducted last August on the IJkdijk in Bellingwolde in the north of the Netherlands.

Deltares was responsible for conducting the test series. The project comprised ‘all-in-one sensor validation testing’, a number of experiments to determine the quality and predictability of sensors, and of analysis and visualisation systems. This gave companies the opportunity to subject their instruments to testing in high-water conditions. The test dike was filled with sensors and monitoring equipment.

In the film, the parties involved describe the test set-up, explain why it is important and talk about the interest from throughout the world. Two Deltares employees with important roles in the project were also interviewed. André Koelewijn, the designer of the test dikes, talks about the dike breach and failure mechanisms, and project leader Haike van Lottum describes the loading of the dike.

After the completion of the test, all the information from the equipment in the dike was collected, and an independent committee has been analysing those data in recent months. Their conclusions are important for the suppliers because a positive outcome can boost the market chances for their products. But dike managers are also keen to hear the outcome because the equipment can provide valuable information in addition to visual dike inspections.

The IJkdijk Foundation includes, alongside Deltares: STOWA, TNO, NOM and Sensor Universe.

The film lasts 8 minutes. It is in Dutch, with English subtitles.
