Little Lake Harbor Dredging Begins This Month

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awarded a contract for maintenance dredging of Little Lake Harbor, located on Lake Superior about 30 miles east of Grand Marais in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The contract, for $265,500, was awarded to Great Lakes Dock & Materials, Muskegon, Mich. This is one of seven dredging contracts to be awarded using $5.9 million of dredging funds provided by the State of Michigan.

This dredging project provides access to a designated Harbor of Refuge that offers mariners shelter from storms,” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer. “The recreational and fishing boat traffic in Little Lake Harbor is also vital to the local economy. We are pleased to be able to provide design, contracting and construction management services to the state of Michigan in support of this critical dredging project.”

Great Lakes Dock & Materials will dredge 31,000 cubic yards of shoaled material and place it on the shoreline for beach nourishment. The work is expected to begin in mid-September and wrap up by early October.
