USACE Hosts Meeting on Rockaway Beach Study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the New York State Depoartment of Environmental Conservation, will host a public information session to share information regarding the ongoing East Rockaway to Rockaway Inlet and Jamaica Bay Reformulation Study.

This meeting will take place tomorrow from 6pm to 8pm, at 50 Aviator Road (Ryan Visitor Center, Floyd Bennett Field), Brooklyn, NY.

The meetings primarily consist of poster board sessions where the public will be able to view informational poster boards and interact directly with personnel that can discuss aspects of the ongoing study.

The project study area includes the Rockaway Peninsula and the communities surrounding Jamaica Bay in the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn in New York City. The original Rockaway Beach project was authorized by Congress as a 100-200 foot wide beach at an elevation of 10 feet above Mean Low Water from Beach 149th Street to Beach 19th Street, approximately 6.2 miles.

After Hurricane Sandy, the Corps expanded its efforts studying coastal storm risk management alternatives beyond the Atlantic Coast of the Rockaway Peninsula to include vulnerable communities surrounding Jamaica Bay that were also significantly impacted by the storm.
