Drop In Session for Carrum Beach Renourishment Next Week

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has invited the public to a community information session about the Carrum beach renourishment project, State Government of Victoria just announced.

The meeting will be held at the Carrum Surf Life Saving Club on February 8, 2017 from 5:30-7:00pm.

DELWP Senior Project Manager, Coastal Programs, Jill Garvey, said: “The beach renourishment  will assist in providing erosion protection for the foreshore along with a wider beach for the community to enjoy.”

“Beaches are a naturally dynamic environment and coastal erosion is a process impacting beaches around the world. Renourishment is one of the most effective methods we have of protecting beaches in Port Phillip Bay,” Ms Garvey said.

“This renourishment project is part of the Protection of Port Phillip Bay, Beaches and Foreshores Program and we are working with the City of Kingston and Parks Victoria to make this happen.

“At the information session people can view the renourishment plans, talk to the project team and raise any questions with us or the City of Kingston representative.”

Approximately 5,000 cubic meters of sand will be used to enlarge the foreshore.

It  will be sourced from Parks Victoria’s dredging operations that occur regularly in the Patterson River mouth.

Renourishment works on Carrum Beach are likely to begin toward the end of April 2017 and may occur over a period of four weeks provided the weather conditions are suitable, the announcement said.
