Great Lakes Dredge Wins Ocean City Beach Renourishment Contract
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, has awarded a $12.7 million Atlantic Coast beach re-nourishment contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, work will be performed in Ocean City, Maryland, with an estimated completion date of May 16, 2018.
The State of Maryland, Worcester County, and Ocean City have a long term (50 year) written partnership agreement with the Corps to perform periodic beach renourishment as needed to maintain adequate storm protection.
Per this agreement, USACE designs and manages the needed renourishment dredging operations and pays for 53% of the cost of renourishment.
On average, 800,000 cubic yards of sand is required to renourish the beach every four years.
With optimum funding the periodic beach renourishment and annual monitoring activities will continue through 2044.
