The Philippines Government’s Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to carry out a night shift for workers in the ongoing clean-up campaign of Manila Bay.

DPWH-Bureau of Equipment (BOE) Director, Toribio Ilao, said that they are finalizing the plans to have night shift or second shift workers, who will transfer material excavated from the bay to the landfill in Navotas City.

While there is no exact number of second shift workers, it definitely will be smaller than those working during the morning as the first shift will be responsible for dredging and partial hauling transport,” Ilao said.

The landfill in Navotas, accredited by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is expected to be utilized starting next week.

Currently, the excavated silt is being transferred to Bicutan, Taguig City.

Ilao added that four amphibious excavators and other heavy equipment are now strategically deployed in the area.

Earlier this month, the DPWH started its desilting operations to remove some 225,000 cubic meters of silt across the approximately 1.5km stretch of Manila Bay, from Manila Yacht Club breakwater up to the U.S. embassy in Manila.
