St. Johns County coastal scheme about to begin

The Fort Matanzas vehicular beach access ramp and associated parking lot will close on Tuesday, September 7, to allow the mobilization and setup of equipment for sand placement activities.

“While the project is underway, there will be no pedestrian or vehicular access to the beach from this parking lot. The ramp and associated parking lot will remain closed throughout the project duration and are expected to re-open by November 2021, weather permitting,” said the St. Johns County.

The project will focus on strengthening the coastline dunes in Ponte Vedra Beach, South Ponte Vedra Beach, and the southern three-quarters of a mile in Crescent Beach.

The emergency dune enhancements will provide extra protection to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, and will be an added defense for our coastline against future storm events.

The project will enhance the existing dunes on 11.5 miles of beaches by placing up to 480,000 cubic yards of sand and planting dune vegetation.
