Another season of NPI coastal defense project complete

Coastal Partners, a partnership consisting of four local authorities – Havant, Portsmouth, Gosport and Fareham, announced recently that all planned work for phase 4 of the North Portsea Island scheme has been completed on time.

Despite a challenging year with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in place, Brexit and even the Suez Canal blockage affecting some of the material deliveries, the team was able to successfully finish this year of coastal defence work before the winter break, the Coastal Partners announced.

Over the past few months Coastal Partners:

  • Carried out final concrete pours and completed work to the two now improved slipways, at the Tudor Sailing Club and the Andrew Simpson Centre. Both slipways are now reopened for use;
  • Continued work on the wall to the south of the slipways, which included finishing the concrete work to form the “lower” and “upper” concrete walls with eco-formliner to encourage marine life to colonise;
  • Successfully installed the first sections of glass flood wall, where individual glass sections were slotted in between two upright aluminium posts attached to the concrete wall. Weighing in at around 350kg each, they were lifted in position using a truck mounted crane with a vacuum lifter.

Works planned for spring/summer 2022 at Harbourside Park:

  • A sheet pile wall will be installed to help form the base for the glass flood wall;
  • Prior to piling works, a condition survey will be undertaken, including an inspection and photographic record of the local area;
  • The concrete base will then be formed, and the glass flood wall installed;
  • These works are planned from 01 April 2022 to September 2022.
