Breakwater Repair

Repairs have resumed on the Dunkirk Harbor’s west breakwater, strengthening the structure that protects the harbor from Lake Erie’s waves and helps provide safer conditions for navigation.

For Dunkirk, that means more than infrastructure. It means supporting the boaters, anglers and visitors who head out on the lake and enjoy the harbor each season,” the USACE Buffalo District said.

The breakwater is critical to safe navigation in Dunkirk Harbor and has sustained damage from years of wave and ice exposure. The first phase of repairs fixed approximately 1,850 feet of the structure, with a second phase ongoing now through November 2026 to repair the remaining 450 feet.
