Abu Dhabi Ports Company CEO Presents Latest Developments of Kizad

Mr. Tony Douglas, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, presented to 150 attendees at the Deliotte Middle East Partners Meeting 2011. The event was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi, where Mr. Douglas was invited as the guest of honour, to present the latest developments of Kizad (Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi) and the new Khalifa Port.

Kizad’s overriding aim is to support the diversification of Abu Dhabi’s industrial base in line with the provisions of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. Accordingly the industries targeted by Kizad are among those highlighted by the Economic Vision as the primary and enabling industries required to drive the nation forward. These include:

– Aluminium,

– Steel,

– Engineered Metal Products,

– Petrochemicals & Chemicals,

– Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Equipment,

– Food,

– Paper, Printing & Packaging,

– Trade & Logistics,

– Mixed Use & Other Industries.

An ultra-modern facility, the Khalifa Port approach channel and basin have been dredged to a depth of 16 metres to accommodate the largest container ships. Another key feature is the first semi-automated container terminal in the region. The Port Island extends 6 km offshore, has a principal quay wall of 3.2 km and is linked to the mainland by a bridge 1 km long.

The Khalifa Port’s flexible Masterplan provides for phased capacity growth over the next 40 years, in line with the development of Kizad. Khalifa Port will initially offer an annual capacity of 2 million containers a year plus 8 million tonnes of bulk and breakbulk cargo. It will grow over a number of phases and will eventually be able to handle 15 million TEUs and 35 million tonnes of bulk cargo, with Emal handling 4 million tonnes of cargo a year at its exclusive berth.
