Bangladesh: Government Announces Capital Dredging Plan

The Bangladesh government has announced the plan that will ensure smooth navigability on the important river routes in the country.

This capital development plan includes the massive dredging program on 53 rivers which will cost about Tk 18.74 billion, according to thefinancialexpress-bd.com.

As soon as the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) receives the nod from the Ministry of Shipping (MoS), they will call for tender for this major development venture.

If everything goes according to plan, the dredging will commence this year and end in June, 2018, said Chairman of BIWTA Dr Samsuddoha Khondoker.

The proposed dredging routes are: Dhaka – Munshiganj – Gozaria – Chandpur – Chittagong, Chittagong -Cox’s Bazar – Saint Martins – Teknaf, Chandpur – Charprokash – Hijla – Barisal, Syedpur – Bandura/Srinagar, Goshiakhali – Barisal –Kaliganj – Chandpur – Aricha, Bairab Bazar – Lipsa – Chhatak – Sylhet, Ghaglazar – Mohanganj, Lauerghar – Durlobpur, Chittri – Nabinagar – Kuti Bazar, Narsingdi – Kotiadi, Narsingdi – Morichakandi – Salimganj – Bansarampur – Homna and Daudkandi – Homna and others, reports thefinancialexpress-bd.com.

A smooth navigability on river routes should enormously help growth of the Bangladesh’s economy.
