Pakistan Hands Over Gwadar Port to Chinese Company

The Government of India is aware of the development of Gwadar Port in Pakistan with Chinese funding and of the reports of handing over the control of port operations to a Chinese firm.

The port could be used for military purposes in future. Government keeps a constant watch on all developments concerning it’s national security and commercial interests and takes all necessary measures to safeguard them in accordance with the prevailing security situation and strategic considerations. China has also participated in the Indian Ocean Region in development projects like ports, deep sea mining, ocean research as well as anti-piracy operations.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri H.K Dua in Rajya Sabha yesterday.
