Egypt: New Suez Canal Dredging Kicks Off

New Suez Canal Dredging Kicks Off

Major General Kamel al-Waziri, chief of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, said that the New Suez Canal dredging program will start today.

Waziri added that dredgers will enter into the site of the New Suez Canal to begin the second stage of digging in parallel with the dry digging.

On August 5, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attended the inauguration of the waterway to be dug alongside the Suez Canal. It is meant to add an extra lane to the Suez Canal, one of the world’s most important thoroughfares for trade, in an attempt to increase the number of ships using it each day.

This development project will boost Egypt’s economy and help speed up the movement of vessels through the 193 km long canal, which connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
